What workplace facilities should you provide?

As an employer, you must provide facilities that meet the needs of workers which means that welfare facilities must be available and also a safe and healthy environment to work in.

  • Welfare facilities – you must provide the correct number of toilets and toilet paper and also washbasins with hot and cold running water with soap and towels or a hand-dryer, provide drinking water and somewhere to rest and to eat meals plus a place to store clothing if specialist clothing is worn for work.
  • Working environment – this must be a clean workplace with waste containers, reasonable working temperature (usually at least 16°C, or 13°C for strenuous work), good ventilation with fresh air or via ventilation and suitable lighting for the task, also the right amount of space and seating.
  • Safe workplace – a safe workplace includes well-maintained premises and equipment, no obstructions on floors or traffic routes and windows that can be opened and cleaned easily.

The facilities that you provide will be different from industry to industry and business to business.  Some industries have greater requirements in place such as construction sites.
