World Bartender Day 2022

Did you know that this Thursday is World Bartender Day?

The global event is celebrated every year on February 24 to recognise the role that bartenders play in the hospitality industry.

It might seem like a modern profession, but it is actually one of the oldest in the world and is said to have emerged thousands of years ago in places such as Rome and Greece.

Sadly, the role is also part of the industry which reports one of the highest levels or workplace accidents in Great Britain.

According to the latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Accommodation and Food Services industry reported the third highest number of non-fatal workplace injuries between 2018-19 and 2020-21.

Nearly 2,500 British hospitality workers were injured during the period – with higher figures only being reported by those working in Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing and Construction.

How should we celebrate World Bartender Day?

Bartenders keep customers supplied with beverages and work hard to make sure everyone has a good time.

So, the next time you’re having a fun night out with friends or family don’t forget to thank your bartender!

Another good way for those working in the industry to celebrate World Bartender Day is to make sure that everything is being done on the premises to keep our bartenders safe and healthy.

The main hazards faced by bartenders include slips, trips and falls, musculoskeletal disorders caused by manual handling, contact dermatitis and cuts from knives.

There are some key things that can be done to reduce these hazards for bartenders.

For example, to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls ensure that any drink spillages are cleaned up immediately, fix leaks quickly and make sure things like boxes and cables aren’t left lying around behind the bar.

When it comes to knives make sure employees are trained to use them safely and that knives are stored securely when they are not in use. Never leave knives loose on the bar where they can be accidentally pushed off.
