Employers are wholly accountable for the health, safety and welfare within in the workplace; a  health and safety policy is where your company will state how they plan to do this. Once the policy is in place, it must be communicated to the workforce and made available for reference. Workers are also to be made aware of any revisions or changes to the policy.

Not having one can lead to considerable legal consequences including fines, penalties or civil liability action.

What is a health and safety policy?

A health and safety policy is a written document that states a company’s commitment to providing a safe workplace. A health and safety policy is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. For businesses of less than five people, a written document isn’t necessary, however all employees must have an understanding of procedure, therefore a written statement makes sense across the board.

You must share your health and safety policy with your employees and update them of any changes as they occur.

It is vital to clearly state how you, as the employer, will manage health and safety in your company.

What should a health and safety policy include?

A health and safety policy has three main parts: a policy statement, information on the organisation, and the arrangements.

A policy statement: What is your general policy on health and safety at work and what are your aims? This statement should be signed by the most senior person in the company and reviewed regularly.

The organisation’s information: list the names and positions of all the people in your business who have a responsibility for health and safety. Be clear about who does what and be sure that each person is aware of their role.

Arrangements: Finally, the arrangements give specific details about all the plans you have in place to achieve your aims and manage health and safety within your business, for example risk assessments, site security, control of hazardous substances.

Why should you consider asking a consultant to put together your health and safety policy?

Health and Safety Consultants have professional knowledge and expertise that can spot potential risk and hazards within your company quickly and effectively. That knowledge is also key in making sure that your policy, and related arrangements meet legal requirements and protect workers and anyone else who could be affected by the activities of your company.

How to get into Fire Safety

It used to be that there were no formal prerequisites to get into fire safety and become a fire risk assessor. Many fire risk assessors were employed due to their previous experience in relevant occupations such as firefighters or fire alarm fitters.
