It has been a full year since the new fire safety guidance came into effect within section 156 of the Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA).

On 1 October 2023 the regulations for new fire safety legal provisions were laid in Parliament and this October, Acorn Safety Services has had its busiest month of the year for fire safety services.

During October 2024, we saw more enquiries for fire door inspections than ever before, which we’ve put  down to the first anniversary of the new rules.

What changed?

Section 156 of the BSA made a number of amendments to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) to improve fire safety in all buildings regulated by the FSO.

This included the requirement that each workplace has a responsible person who must record a completed fire risk assessment, have clear fire safety arrangements and share all relevant fire safety information with any other designated responsible people.

Preventing fire

It is crucial to have an up-to-date fire risk assessment in your business in order to protect your workplace and your workforce from the dangers of fire.

A thorough fire risk assessment identifies potential fire hazards and evaluates the risks associated with them.

For businesses with five or more employees, it is a legal requirement to document the significant findings of any fire risk assessment to all employees and anyone else who might be affected so that they are aware of all potential danger and the measures in place to try to avoid a fire.

get into fire safety

How to get into Fire Safety

It used to be that there were no formal prerequisites to get into fire safety and become a fire risk assessor. Many fire risk assessors were employed due to their previous experience in relevant occupations such as firefighters or fire alarm fitters.

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire however, there is now only one route to get into fire safety and become a fire risk assessor with the new British Standard and that’s to complete a Level 3 Fire Risk Assessor course.

A Level 3 course is tricky to attack without any previous knowledge of the…
