Don’t let your health and safety horrors turn into a Hallowe’en nightmare

Health and Safety nightmares

The nights are drawing in, Hallowe’en is fast approaching, and your health and safety horrors are still sending shivers down your spine…

You might try and ignore the unsettling sound of the skeletons locked inside your closet but the team of experts at Acorn Safety Services know they’re in there – and now there’s nowhere for you to hide.

So let us take you by the hand and guide you through our list of the scariest ever health and safety sins and show you how the team at Acorn Safety Services can help you banish your worst nightmares – forever.

Health and safety sin number 1 – Get a fire risk assessment

Fire – one word guaranteed to strike fear into the hearts of everyone. In a matter of seconds, a fire can destroy everything in its path, including your business.

Getting a fire risk assessment is the best way to protect yourself, your colleagues and your business from the devastating consequences of a fire and the team at Acorn Safety Services is here to help.

By carrying out a fire risk assessment you will be able to identify any existing risks and any safety measures which need to be put in place to mitigate them.

You’ll also be able to put together an emergency plan and provide detailed training to your staff.

Risk assessments should be updated annually or whenever there are major changes to your business, such as a move to new premises or a change in personnel.

Failure to do so could result in fines or even prison.

Health and safety sin number 2 – Never ignore asbestos

The threat of asbestos is something we should never ignore.

More than 20 years after it was banned in new buildings it still poses a significant threat to health, particularly if it is damaged or fractured accidently, releasing deadly asbestos fibres into the air.

These fibres can go on to cause diseases including mesothelioma, a deadly cancer which affects the lungs and the stomach and kills approximately 2,500 every year in the UK.

If your premises were built before 2000, Acorn Safety Services recommends that you get a full asbestos survey. If evidence of asbestos is found it can then be managed safely, protecting the safety and wellbeing of everyone around you.

Health and safety sin number 3 – Don’t get lazy with legionella

Legionella bacteria may be tiny, but it still packs a deadly punch, particularly if it finds its way into your water supply where it can multiply.

If it is ingested, legionella bacteria can go on to cause Legionnaires Disease which can be fatal, particularly among the elderly and those who whose immune systems are compromised.

The best way to tackle the threat of legionella head on is by monitoring your water supply regularly.

A thorough risk assessment will identify, quantify and assess the potential sources of risk of exposure to the legionella bacteria and assess the existing control measures in place.

Our experts will also look at the level of training available and provide guidance on any remedial actions which may be required.
