Acorn Safety Services – leading the way with health and safety advice for charities and organisations across the UK

World Water Monitoring Day: We support a large number of clients with legionella testing including Northampton Hope Centre

NO two days are ever the same for the team at Acorn Safety Services who travel across the UK supporting businesses and other organisations with all their health and safety needs.

This week our work took us closer to home, helping Northampton-based charity Hope Centre and Hope Centre Enterprises, which helps to support homeless and vulnerable people across Northamptonshire.

Legionella and Fire Consultant, Adam Midson, met the team and carried out a full Legionella Risk Assessment at the charity’s John Smith Centre.

The Hope Centre, is just on of the many organisations Acorn Safety Service’s work with regularly to ensure their health and safety needs continue to be met.

Legionella Risk Assessments – your first line of defence against deadly bacteria

A legionella risk assessment is a really simple way of protecting yourself and those around you from the dangers of legionella bacteria, which can put vulnerable people at risk of developing Legionnaires’ Disease if it is not identified and dealt with quickly and efficiently.

With the warmer weather hopefully soon approaching, it makes sense to get your water systems checked now, particularly air conditioning systems, where bacteria can thrive when the systems are turned off throughout the winter.

During a legionella risk assessment, our trained consultants will take samples from key areas. These samples will then be processed, giving you the answers you need quickly.

From there, we’ll advise you on the steps you need to take next, including treatment remediation if legionella is identified.

What is legionella?

Legionella is tiny, but packs a powerful punch if it finds its way into your water systems.

If water droplets containing the bacteria are inhaled by vulnerable people including the elderly, or those whose immune systems are compromised, they could cause Legionnaires’ Disease which can prove deadly in some people.

As with many things to do with health and safety, taking action early before it becomes a problem is always the best approach, so we would advise carrying out a legionella risk assessment every year as part of your regular health and safety programme.
