Today, Tuesday, 28th April, is the World Day for Health and Safety at Work. As leading health and safety practitioners, this is an awareness day close to our hearts.
Led by the International Labour Organization, this annual international initiative is to shine a spotlight on the importance of safe workplaces – both physically and emotionally – something we do daily in our field.
This year’s theme looks at the psychosocial factors and risks to mental health at work. A new global report from the ILO has revealed that more than 840,000 people die each year from health conditions linked to psychosocial risks, such as long working hours, job insecurity, and workplace harassment.
These work-related psychosocial risks are mainly associated with cardiovascular diseases and mental disorders, including suicide.
We support businesses, property managers and facilities teams to meet their legal obligations, reduce risk and stay compliant with confidence, but more than that, we support business leaders and managers to protect their staff and provide safe and healthy working environments.
Poorly managed workplaces are damaging both the workers’ health and the local economy.
Latest annual figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that there were 124 workers killed in work-related incidents in Great Britain in 2024-25. This compares to 223 deaths twenty years before in 2004/05 and 495 in 1981.
Though the figures have fallen significantly over the past four decades, 124 is still 124 too many.
The industries with the highest number of deaths were construction (35) and agriculture, forestry and fishing (23) with the most common cause of fatal injuries being falls from a height, representing over a quarter of worker deaths in 2024/25.
Here at Acorn Safety Services, we celebrate the World Day for Health and Safety at Work on 28th April by doing what we do best, visiting organisations, businesses and public buildings to ensure their safety and protect the lives of the occupants.
Our approach to health and safety is bespoke. We don’t just tick boxes, we use our real-world experience and listen to what you need. We work alongside businesses, property managers and duty holders to deliver practical, proportionate compliance that actually works.
Maybe there are hidden health and safety gaps in your business. Have you considered psychosocial factors as well as physical risks?
We offer free health and safety compliance audits with an experienced consultant to give you an independent view of where you stand against current health and safety and fire safety requirements.
