While the recent heatwaves have brought a dramatic increase in outdoor swimming in paddling pools and lakes this summer, many people prefer the joy of a hot tub, which can be enjoyed year-round. However, like any water system, its longevity relies upon it being well maintained and safe to use.
In order to ensure that a hot tub is clean and safe, it must undergo regular hot tub sampling, in which the water must be regularly sampled and tested.
Testing should be carried out by a UKAS-accredited laboratory and samples should be tested for Legionella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and total viable counts (TVC).
Frequency of testing
Hot tub microbiological sampling requirements depend on the bacteria that the water is being checked for.
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa and TVC – should be tested monthly
- Legionella – should be tested quarterly (every three months) as a minimum
More frequent hot tub sampling may be required if previous results have been unsatisfactory, if there is a change in the system or its use or if the spa pool is used by vulnerable individuals.
Sampling Procedure
It is vital that all samples are taken from the body of the spa pool water itself, rather than from taps or inlets, and samples must be collected in sterile bottles, often containing sodium thiosulphate to neutralise residual disinfectant. Samples should be timely and reach the laboratory within 24 hours of collection in order to be testable.
When checked, the lab is ensuring that pseudomonas aeruginosa is not detectable in 100ml, Legionella should not be detectable in 100ml and TVC at 37°C should be fewer than 200 colony-forming units (CFU) per ml.
Additional cleanliness measures
In order to keep the hot tub clean and avoid any bacteria being present, the water level and temperature should be checked daily and any surface dirt or debris removed.
The water must also be tested for alkalinity and pH levels twice a week.
The hot tub’s filter cartridges should be rinsed weekly and thoroughly cleaned with chemical products once a month. The hot tub should be drained, thoroughly wiped down and checked for any damage before being refilled at least once a quarter.
