All our staff daily strive to be the best versions of themselves and provide the best possible service. Days are full of health and safety assessments, external training and collaborative working.

No two days are ever the same here at Acorn Safety Services as we problem solve for our customers, but here, our Legionella and Fire Manager Adam Midson talks us through his typical day.

Early bird catches the worm

My day starts at 6am at home, where I help sort the kids out before I check my phone for emails. I look at my diary and those of my team, so I know what everyone is up to, then plan my route for the day. I am on-site most days, and this means I travel all over Britain and Ireland to visit clients. I carry out legionella and fire risk assessments, legionella and fire training, and conduct job interviews to grow our fantastic team.

Staying on top of admin

During the day, whenever I get a chance to sit down, I respond to any emails and send documents over to anyone who might need them. I respond to any clients waiting for assistance and review legislation, guidance and any CPD, plus work with the scheduling team to make best use of time. I also look after the Legionella and Fire app for Acorn Safety, so I deal with any technical issues with that too.

I love Acorn Safety Services

I really enjoy my job, and I like helping people. I work for decent human beings, who make my life easy, and we’ve got a great team. We are good people, and we have a good conscience and that comes from the top down.

We genuinely care and we do everything by the book. We say this is what we’ve found, and this is what you should do. If we can help, then we will.

We are on the ball with everything, we respond and help immediately, and we move as quickly as humanly possible.

I like to train up new staff and set them on the right path for success in our industry.

Traffic and lack of time can be tricky as we’re very busy, but I like being out and about and fixing things for people. I like helping businesses to run smoothly and compliantly.

My motivation

Providing for my family is my greatest motivation. I continually try to better myself and give my kids the right start in life, by showing them what good work ethic and decency looks like.

In the office, my motivation extends to helping my colleagues to do as well as they can by getting everyone trained up to be the best version of themselves.

Fire Safety: Choosing the Right Fire Extinguisher

There are five main types of fire extinguisher, commonly used to tackle a blaze. But choosing the right fire extinguisher is vital. It could mean the difference between putting out the flames or making the situation worse. Using the wrong fire extinguisher can fuel a fire, spread burning liquids further, or even cause a dangerous electric shock. The most important factor is to have the right fire extinguisher for the medium you are going to put out.

So, what are the five main five extinguishers?

get into fire safety

How to get into Fire Safety

It used to be that there were no formal prerequisites to get into fire safety and become a fire risk assessor. Many fire risk assessors were employed due to their previous experience in relevant occupations such as firefighters or fire alarm fitters.

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire however, there is now only one route to get into fire safety and become a fire risk assessor with the new British Standard and that’s to complete a Level 3 Fire Risk Assessor course.

A Level 3 course is tricky to attack without any previous knowledge of the…
